Revelations that Nycole Turmel was a member of the Bloc Quebecois less than 5 weeks before she became a candidate for the NDP in 2011 have reinforced doubts about the socialist party's competence and ability to be an effective opposition.
Jack Layton appointed Turmel, a former union boss, to be interim leader while he takes time off to fight another attack of cancer, following remission of the prostate cancer he had been diagnosed with last year.
Tim Harper in The Toronto Star observes, "If Jack Layton knew that the woman he recommended as interim leader of Her Majesty’s Loyal Opposition was, until a month before running for the NDP, a member of a party bent on breaking the federation, he showed a spectacular lack of judgment."
Not that judgment has ever been Layton's strong suit.
The Globe and Mail reports: "This is yet another worrying example of the NDP not up to the job of governing Canada when its interim leader was a full member of the sovereigntist Bloc Québécois just a few short months ago,” said Dimitri Soudas, spokesman for Prime Minister Stephen Harper."
Of course, Layton could have exercised even worse judgment by appointing the worst MP in Canada to be his successor.
